Born in Saginaw County, Michigan and raised on a farm, Irish-American character actor Harry Shannon Harry Shannon (Jun. 13, 1890 - Jul. 27, 1964) developed his musical comedy talents working in vaudeville and repertory companies. His Broadway shows include "Oh, Kay!" (1926), "Hold Everything" (1928), "Simple Simon" (1931), and "Pardon My English" (1933). Harry was a company member of Joseph Schildkraut's Hollywood Theater Guild.
He started in films doing comedy shorts with Bert Lahr and Shemp Howard. He grew into character roles, particularly in westerns, but he will always be remembered as Kane's alcoholic father in Orson Wells' classic Citizen Kane (1941). On the screen he appeared in The Sullivans (1944), The Jolson Story (1946), High Noon (1952), Touch of Evil (1958) and The Buccaneer (1959). He played the grandfather in the musical Gypsy (1962). His appearances on TV westerns include "Have Gun, Will Travel," "Cheyenne," "Rawhide," and "Gunsmoke."
Shannon died in 1964 at age 74. His remains are at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in the Abbey of the Psalms, Haven of Trust.
